Grade 1-3--After spending the night in a dark hut together, a goat and a wolf make a date for lunch the next day. They are shocked to discover that they had spent the night with their mortal enemy but agree that they are still friends and set off for their picnic. Along the way the wolf drops his lunch and has to deal with his increasing appetite in the presence of his temptingly tasty pal. The goat narrowly escapes becoming a meal and another storm helps the wolf stay strong in his conviction to keep his friend. The long, obscure story will not hold children's attention. Double-page, crayon-and-watercolor illustrations alternate with pen-and-ink drawings on a page or two of solid color; instead of helping the story flow smoothly, they add to the feeling of awkwardness. The pictures convey a lot of movement with their messy, haphazard lines and are reminiscent of William Steig's work, though the colors are more garish. PreS-Gr. 1. These Japanese best-sellers are intriguing in terms of style and story. In Stormy Night, a goat and wolf take refuge from a storm. They can't see each other, but they form a bond, which remains when they go their separate ways while it's still dark. Much of the book's humor comes from missed opportunities to discover the other's identity. When they meet again in Sunny Day, there's no mistaking who they are: Wolf slips and says, "I've made a date with lunch." The animals struggle to subdue their natural feelings of horror (goat) and hunger (wolf) as they continue their outing. Although the books work best when read together, each one (especially Sunny Day) stands alone. Kimura allows young children to observe some real struggles involving fear, friendship, and natural instinct--and does so in a slyly humorous text that has the rhythms of another land. The loose crayon-and-paint artwork, which makes maximum use of the stormy/sunny backgrounds, encourages imagination; the text leads to discussion. Ilene Cooper
