Paul Angle was fascinated by this more-than-fifty-year history, and his account of violence has become a classic.
About the Author Paul M. Angle, a noted Lincoln scholar, was director of the Chicago Historical Society from 1945 to 1965. Isabel Wallace was only four years old when her father fell at Shiloh. She lived at The Oaks, the family home in Ottawa, Illinois, until her death in 1933. John Y. Simon is a professor of history at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. He is the editor of "The Papers of Ulysses S. Grant," published by Southern Illinois University Press.
